Personally, I would have shot him in the head so he couldnt rob someone else. If you shoot someone in the leg and the foot, they still can grab their weapon and shoot you back.

It was a classic Denny Crane move. Ya have to understand the character as scripted. Had much more humor to it by shooting him in the knee and foot. Conventional double tap just wouldn't be "Denny Crane".
